While at the playground, children may search for their parents’ faces in the crowd as they look for their desired audiences. Hopefully, as parents, you will witness your children’s milestones be it the latter’s first time to slide, climb the monkey bars unaided or even meet their first best friend. Hopefully, parents will never have to witness children suffer their first playground injury.
Fortunately, accidents at the place meant for fun can be prevented. As parents, it is your responsibility to teach your children good manners and proper playground conduct.
Some children can conduct themselves well at the playground even without prior guidance from adults. Even so, there is no harm in teaching or reminding children how they should behave in the space dedicated to them and their present and future playmates.
Below are some suggestions on how you can help maintain the fun during playtime.
- See the equipment for yourself
Visit the playground with your children and teach them which equipment is appropriate for their age. Tell them that it is not safe for them to play with the other equipment yet particularly those meant for older kids.
- Look for the signs
Warning signs must be highly visible. These signs along with other safety labels are important reminders of the potential hazards and dangers that children might be exposed to.
- Hold on to safety using both hands
Fun and safety can go hand in hand. Remind your children to put safety first as injuries are no laughing matter.
- Patiently wait for their turn
It is an important life skill that teaches children how to respect others. This can also prepare them for the future as in real life, people will not instantly get what they want all the time.
- Do not push people or equipment
For instance, they should not push the other kid down the slide with their feet. Children may also be tempted to test the strength of playground equipment. When they do, accidents can happen.
- Proper posture when using sliding down
Their feet – not their head – should land on the ground first. They should sit uprightly before attempting to slide down.
- Call the experts
If you notice that there is a need for certain equipment to be repaired and/or replaced, report it right away. Those who are in-charge may contact and outdoor or indoor playground equipment manufacturer to handle the maintenance works.
For most children, the most memorable event of the day is usually that time when they played outdoors or indoors. Playgrounds are children’s favourite places though these are also where many young people get hurt. As adults, it is important to do what we can to keep children away from danger especially at the space they associate with fun and memorable experiences.
